How to Select Injection Pumps for High Pressure Oilfields
March 12, 2026
In high pressure oilfield applications, the selection of injection pump directly impacts water injection efficiency and oil recovery rates. Given complex geological conditions and extreme operating environments, the pump selection process requires multi-dimensional evaluation—whether for water injection, polymer injection, chemical injection, or CO₂ injection.
1. Technical Parameters
Flow rate and pressure are the primary technical indicators for selecting injection pumps, determining whether the pump can meet oilfield development process requirements. Flow rate must be determined based on the oilfield water injection plan, considering either the daily injection volume or instantaneous injection rate. In high pressure oilfields, daily injection volumes per well vary significantly. Pressure parameters are even more critical, as injection pressure must overcome multiple resistances. Pressure stability affects the water injection spread coefficient, and plunger pump demonstrate distinct advantages under high pressure operating conditions.
2. Medium Characteristics
Common injection fluids in high pressure oilfields include fresh water, produced water, polymer solutions, and chemical displacement agents. Different media impose varying demands on pump corrosion resistance and wear resistance. Medium viscosity and sand content also influence pump selection.
3. Pump Type Selection
Reciprocating pump (especially triplex or quintuplex models) utilize the reciprocating motion of plunger to draw in and discharge fluids, capable of generating extremely high effective head. While these pumps have relatively low displacement, they offer a wide adjustment range and high overall efficiency, making them particularly suitable for conveying low-flow, high-pressure, or even highly viscous liquids.
Diaphragm pump convey fluids through the reciprocating deformation of a diaphragm, making them suitable for transporting liquids containing solid particles, highly corrosive substances, or toxic/hazardous chemical displacement agents. In high pressure oilfield polymer injection and chemical displacement applications, they protect the molecular chain structure of polymer solutions, ensuring efficient oil displacement.
For high pressure, low-flow, high-viscosity, or complex media applications, reciprocating plunger pumps are the preferred choice. Elephant Machinery specializes in manufacturing reciprocating plunger pumps, piston pumps, diaphragm pumps, and complete turnkey solutions.
